Do you know the difference between fashion and style?
Fashion reflects current trends: tie widths, the cut of trousers, the size of lapels. That sort of thing.
Style, on the other hand, is classic. Timeless.
If you were to travel back in time, would you be arrested for what you’re wearing today? If so, that’s fashion, my friend.
Esquire offers some suggestions for items that will withstand the test of time (and time travel): 15 Things That Will Never Go Out of Style.
And while the images are no longer on the site, here’s the full list:
Navy sportcoat
Khaki chinos
Dark brown brogues
Black cap toe Oxford
White dress shirt
Light blue Oxford cloth button-down
Brown belt
Colorful pocket square
Trench coat
Cashmere sweater
Navy suit
Gray wool trousers
Tie (not too skinny, not too wide)
Polo shirt
Watch
This is a solid list, which of cource can be expanded upon. I’d add:
White linen pocket square
Gabardine tie (if you’re going to choose one tie, make it a classic navy blue gabardine)
Black belt (to go with those black cap toe Oxfords)
Fountain pen
I’m sure I’ll come up with others. Make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss what comes next.
Stay classy AF, my friend.
